High in the hills of Tuscany's Chianti region is the 12th century castle-village of Volpaia, which is now a wine lover's delight. This village has become a headquarters of Chianti, Tuscany's most famous wine with production and barrel storage scattered throughout the historic buildings - and underneath them as well! Cellars are hidden in former church crypts and under a historic palazzo. The old jailhouse holds a wine bar, and cooking classes are held in a modern kitchen tucked into the medieval heart of town. There is an osteria in an old stone building that serves Tuscany's typical dishes. And of course there is a tasting room, where you can sample the different versions of Chianti that they produce - including Chianti Classico and Chianti Riserva, as well as a Tuscan Red blend, all using the Sangioveto grape, a local varietal.

Castello di Volpaia lies within the district of Radda in Chianti and is well worth a visit!
