On a crest about town, the ancient castle still stands guard over the coast, directly above the beach. The fortress was originally built by Frederick II as part of his coastal defense system following the Venetian incursion. In the 15th century it was attacked by Saracens twice. It was rebuilt by the Spanish rulers in Aragonese style, similar to many other Spanish fortresses you see.

The castle is a military installation and not usually open to the public, but it is worth a visit to view the external construction and enjoy the eye-popping panoramas from up there!
