Teatro Lauro Rossi
Macerata has a tradition of opera and theater, as evidenced in this beautiful jewel of a theater. It was started in 1765 when a group of 46 nobilmen of Macerata decided to start a theater in the old Palazzo Comunale. The theater was inaugurated in 1774 and later (in 1884) named for local musician Lauro Rossi.
The theater has the characteristic horseshoe shape of Italian opera houses with rows of loggia boxes outlining it. It was one of the early examples of what is now classified as "Italian style theater". It was restored keeping the original features intact and is true gem of architecture and acoustics.
The annual theater season runs in winter and spring; in summer, Macerata's shows take place in the outdoor Sferistico.
