Serrara Fontana
The island of Ischia never fails to surprise. It offers an endless series of breathtaking views and gorgeous scenery. This is certainly the case of Serrara Fontana, whose appeal is both mountain and seaside. The town of Serrara Fontana itself is the highest village on the island, at 360 meters above sea level. Its perch on the ridge-top offers spectacular panoramic views. Wander to the town's belvedere, a communal balcony that overlooks the landscape. Lesser known is the piazzetta, which offers great vistas of the Gulf of Naples with the islands of Procida and Vivara.
From the Piazzetta you can walk the old mule path that leads to the peak of Mt. Epomeo, where you'll find the little church dedicated to St. Nicholas and its accompanying hermitage.
The municipality of Serrara Fontana includes a couple of outlying villages, the most interesting of which is the fishing village of Sant'Angelo. A pedestrian town that fronts the sea, it is a charming place full of character and color. The beach of Le Fumarole is a fascinating place to visit - it boasts the strange phenomenon of sand that emits volcanic vapors! The heat is said to be curative. The ancient volcanic activity also provides a series of hot springs around the island. Visit the "thermal parks" between Sant'Angelo and Maronti, where you can enjoy hot natural spring pools, hydromassage, and a plethora of luxuriant spa treatments.
