In a city as trendy as Milan, it should be no surprise to find a sleek museum like this one. The Museo del Novecento is Milano's modern art gallery; the name novecento (900) refers to the 1900s. The museum encompasses the collection of the defunct civic contemporary art gallery and takes it to a higher level. Housed in the Palazzo dell'Arengario, next to the Royal Palace, the setting is spectacular.

The interior was completely redone to accommodate the atmosphere and collection. A ramp spirals upward and there is a panoramic terrace. In between are a host of sculptures and paintings representing contemporary art, with works from masters like Matisse, Picasso, de Chirico and Modigliani, among many others. In all, there are 5000 square meters (16,400 feet) of exhibit space.

Don't miss the hall of windows overlooking the Cathedral!
