MADRE Museum
The Museo MADRE - Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina in Naples.
In the heart of historic Naples is a striking contrast - a modern museum set in an ancient building. The MADRE Museum is Naples' pulsing heart for the contemporary arts. It is near the Cathedral of San Gennaro, the Archeological Museum and the Accademia di Belle Arti. It is housed in the Palazzo Donnaregina, a former 13th century monastery that was part of the complex of the church of Santa Maria di Donna Regina Vecchia. The de-consecrated church is sometimes used for special exhibits and for classes from the University of Federico II on art restoration. It was built in the 1200s and contains beautiful frescoes from the 1400s.
The museum displays a vast and varied collection spanning every medium - from painting, sculpture and abstract to digital, audio-visual and live artistic installations. It is an internationally-acclaimed home for southern Italy's contemporary arts scene. There is also a library and bookshop.
The MADRE Museum is open from 10:30 AM til 7:30 PM daily; from 10:30 AM til 11:00 PM on Sundays. Closed Tuesdays.
