The Castle Museum in La Spezia holds lots of surprises among its many exhibits. The castle itself is worth the visit, built in 1253 the star-pointed fortress with bastions offers commanding views from its position high above the sea. The museum was established in 1873 and its extensive collection contains parchments, maps, military and historical documents, along with a full range of interesting artifacts.

Exhibits run the gamut from statuary, bronzes and ceramics to mosaics, capitals and Roman inscriptions. There are displays of paleontology, ethnography, and geology. The full scope of history is presented for the Lunigiana area of Tuscany, from prehistory through to the Middle Ages.

The museum also hosts special exhibits and can be used for special events and private parties, too.
