Badolato
In Calabria's province of Catanzaro, the medieval hill town of Badolato sits above the Ionian Sea, on the Riviera degli Angeli, or Angel's Riviera. It was established back in 1080 by Robert Guiscard, a Norman warrior-ruler, who built the castle. Despite its protective setting between two deep valleys, the hamlet of Badolato was attacked in 1269 by Ruffo di Catanzaro, and the inhabitants who were holed up inside the walls, were conquered. It remained under their control until 1451, and then was passed around various feudal lords until 1806.
The town is hospitable, as evidenced by their welcoming approach to immigrants and refugees, beginning in 1997 when the mayor opened a welcome center for Kurds. Since then, the town has continued to take in immigrants, as well as northern European expats and part-time residents who come for the sun, the sea, and the slow lifestyle.
There are many churches around town, but the main one to see is the Immacolata, a splendid stone structure on a hill just beyond town overlooking the sea, dating to the 1680s. It is picturesque and pretty with its maiolica and stucco decors. The church of Santa Caterina is also lovely, and has a nice story: the women of town didn't want the painting of the saint to be taken to Catanzaro for restoration, fearing it wouldn't be returned, so they "occupied" the church to keep it from being transported, and forced the restoration to be done on-site.
Visit Piazza Castello, in front of that ancient fortress that started the town, today a gathering spot. The clock tower is called Torre delle Ore (tower of the hours). There is a good smattering of cafes and restaurants in town.
The town hosts two big festivals, the first being the patron saint day on November 10, to celebrate Sant'Andrea di Avellino. The other is the Holy Week and Easter events, with costumes and processions. A Cunfrunta is a meeting of the resurrected Jesus with his mother Mary after Easter.
The area is known for its olive oil, wine, and fruit production, and its spicy cuisine, so taste the soppressata and Nduja salamis.
Below town, just five kilometers away, is Badolato Marina, the seafront resort frazione of Badolato, that attracts loads of sun-seekers throughout the summer months. There is a marina and plenty of beach facilities for fun and water sports.
