A lofty thrill while you're on Capri is to ride the chair lift to the peak of Mount Solaro. You can enjoy breathtaking views from the highest point on the island, at 589 meters above sea level (1930 feet) that sweep from Naples to Salerno and beyond. Looking down you'll see the faraglioni, the rocks jutting out of the water that are the symbol of Capri, and the azure water of the Mediterranean Sea.

You can catch the chair lift from its terminal near Piazza Vittoria, in Anacapri. It transports you to the peak in 15 minutes, where you can lounge on one of the terraces in sun chairs overlooking the sea, or hit the trails that lead around the area. One takes you to the hermitage of Cetrella, a monastery with a chapel and bell tower, passing through a profusion of wild flowers if you come in the spring. Sailors used to climb up to make a pilgrimage here, in devotion to the image of Mary contained in the church.

The chairlift is called Seggiovia Monte Solaro, and is found just a few steps from Piazza Vittoria on Via Caposcuro. The cost is €10 for a round-trip, or €7 for a one-way ride. It operates as follows: May through October from 9:30 AM til 5:30 PM; November through February from 10:30 AM til 3:00 PM.
